Manchester City were looking to continue their strong start to the season against Newcastle. City had dominated the recent league meetings between these sides, scoring 17 unanswered goals en route to five consecutive victories. The day's other games saw former Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis return to Selhurst Park with his current side West Brom, while Chelsea welcomed Southampton to Stamford Bridge. Elsewhere, Aston Villa hosted Stoke, Leicester travelled to Norwich, Sunderland entertained West Ham and Premier League new boys Bournemouth and Watford met on the south coast.
